Characteristics:

The individual values of this set display minor differences in design but except where mentioned have the following features in common:
  1. No crosshatching between Postes and De Suez’
  2. Lines separating adjacent stamps
  3. All the As have flat tops
  4. The top bar of the Z is extended to the right
  5. The smokestack has both horizontal and vertical shading.
  6. The sunbursts do not touch the borders of the oval
  7. The upper section of the borders of the two circles containing the denomination in the lower part of the stamp are thicker than those of the lower section.

40 Cents
Forgery 3 - 40 Cents

  1. The flowerlike ornaments have 3 petals but these are incorrectly placed.
  2. The comma at the right hand side is missing
  3. There are four passengers ;One in the bow Two between foremast and mainmast, and One just aft of the smokestack.

20 Cents
Forgery 3 - 20 Cents
  1. The line of rigging connecting the top of the foremast with the cross member below is missing.
  2. There are five passengers; One in the bow, Two between foremast and mainmast, one just aft of the smokestack and one in front of the mizzen mast.

5 Cents
Forgery 3 - 5 Cents
  1. There are three passengers on the deck; two between the foremast and the mainmast and one just in front of the mizzenmast.
  2. There is no passenger in the bow.
  3. There is no extension to the top bar of the Z as in the other values of this set.
